Nimrod - Planned Route For Summer
2012
This
is our vague plan for Summer 2012 for any off you who are interested. The only fixed dates and locations are Palma
at the beginning of June and Olbia, Sardinia at the end of June, Sue’s sister,
Caroline and hubby, Rich, are spending 3 weeks with us so we need to be at the
airports at the right times. We are all
looking forward to having a great time together.
The
rest of the plan is subject to the vagaries of the weather, how far we feel
like sailing or how long we feel like stopping in any particular place.
From
Gibraltar in early May we plan to make our way along the Spanish Mediterranean
Coast fairly quickly towards the Balearics to meet Caroline and Rich at the
beginning of June. This stretch of coast
is not that interesting or attractive, being mostly overdeveloped Costa’s for
the package holiday trade, so we do not think we are going to miss too much.
June
we will spend around the Balearics before crossing to Sardinia later in the
month to drop Caroline and Rich off at Olbia on the NE corner. After that we may well explore Corsica, again
weather and time may well dicate how far we get and how much of Corsica we
manage to see, we may just visit the East coast or we may manage to go all the
way round the Island.
From
Corsica we plan to head back to Sardinia and take our time exploring the East
Coast of the Island, this will probably take us until the end of August. Next we cross to Sicilly where we will
probably cruise along the North and East coasts before finding ourselves a
parking spot for the winter, probably in one of the marinas on the South coast
of Sicily.
This
is a grand total of around 1700nm if we follow the route shown on the chart
above and we will have already covered over 300nm by the time we get to
Gibraltar, a total of around 2000nm for the summer. This is a little bit less than we have
covered in the last two summers so it seems a good plan to aim for.
Perhaps we will have to compare the plan with
the actual at the end of the summer to see what happened, especially seeing as
our plan while wintering in Lagos was to get to Greece this summer!!!! We decided it was probably a bit too far for
comfort so we settled for Sicily as a potential wintering spot instead.
