Nimrod of Malvern

Nimrod Sailing on the Big Blue Ocean |
Nimrod was built by Broadblue Catamarans Ltd in 2003, she was commissioned in September 2003. Broadblue was set up after Prout Catamarans went out of business, the main management staff from Prout set up the new Company with other backers. There is plenty of information available on the internet about the demise of Prout, and unfortunately, the failure of Broadblue Catamarans Ltd in 2008/2009 if anyone is interested. Broadblue has since been revived by Mark Jarvis of Multihull World and Mark Elliot, one of the original investors in Broadblue Catamarans.
The Broadblue 42 was a new design by Stuart Davidsen of Broadblue Catamarans Ltd and Nimrod was the very first boat built and commissioned to the new design. We bought her in July 2005 after initially planning to buy a new Broadblue 385, however Nimrod was available on brokerage at the same time and circumstances meant that she was available for a bargain price, so we changed our minds and bought Nimrod instead of the new 385. We are very happy with our choice.
Since Nimrod was the first BB42 built she was equipped with an extensive list of extras and upgrades compared to the standard specification. Almost all these extras suited our long term cruising plans so we ended up with a very comprehensively equipped, little used yacht. The full specification including a list of the extras and upgrades is given at the bottom of this page.
Here you can see the galley and saloon areas of Nimrod, including Sue’s ornaments!! Unfortunately our little dog, Benj, is no longer with us so will not be experiencing our Adventures with us. He was all set to sail off with us, having got his passport, microchip and inoculations, but he passed away in May 2009 – he is still missed very much.

Galley |
Nimrod is equipped with a comprehensive switch panel and Navigation area, based around the chart table that is positioned on the aft port bulkhead of the saloon area, just inside the doors from the cockpit. As with most modern yachts the chart table is not really big enough for traditional chart work, but the area works fine for modern electronic navigation with paper charts for a backup.

We bought Nimrod with the intention of going long term, long distance cruising – Sell Up and Sail Away!!! No matter how well equipped a yacht is, it is never going to be properly suited to the full time live-aboard lifestyle so we have done numerous modifications and upgrades to her over the last 4 years or so. The details of these upgrades are given on a separate page see “Upgrades and Improvements”.
Some people will want to know about any problems we have had or Nimrod’s performance and suitability for the lifestyle we plan to lead so all these sorts of issues are dealt with on our “Broadblue Pros and Cons” page.
As promised, here is the factory specification for Nimrod:
The Broadblue 42 – Detailed Specifications
The Broadblue 42 is designed for single or short-handed sailing being fast and responsive, she is built to the high quality standards expected of Broadblue Catamarans. The Broadblue 42 sails effortlessly on all points of sailing, even loaded for cruising, and in particular will sail close winded and tack swiftly.
The Broadblue 42 is designed for the cruising family who need more comfort, storage and space onboard. The galley and saloon are very spacious and are complimented by the admired handcrafted joinery produced by Mark Elliot Furniture.
The striking fine entry hulls and precise lines of this yacht are the result of thirty years of design experience. CONSTRUCTION.
All Broadblue catamarans are rated to the highest level of the European Recreational Craft Directive: Category A ( Ocean ) and are built using Lloyds approved materials.
Hull and Deck
Both one -piece hull and deck mouldings are hand laid glassfibre, using powder - bound mat, biaxial woven rovings, isopthalic resin, and Kevlar reinforcement in high load areas. Below the waterline, the hulls are solid laminate, while the topsides and deck incorporate an end grain balsa core. The deck has an integrally moulded non - slip finish. The hull and deck join is fully bonded and protected by a substantial rubbing strake. Many of the structural bulkheads are of vacuum bagged foam core, and when the interior furniture is fully bonded, in a light and stiff ‘honeycomb’ structure is created.
Rudders and Steering
Rudders are skeg hung on Stainless Steel stocks with self - lubricating bearings. The rudders are linked together by wire with the hydraulic ram attached directly to the starboard rudder. The port rudder has an access hatch above and is designed to accept an emergency tiller.
General
The Broadblue 42 is virtually unsinkable due to its watertight bulkheads and buoyancy compartments fore and aft. The keels are integrally moulded and sealed off from the hulls forming a double bottom.
